Philosophy

FIRST DIMENSION Emphases for developmental coaching:

Preparation of player, family and coach for future successes more than the passion for winning in the present.

Player instruction more than recruiting already-skilled players.

Success in building up players for wins with future coaches, more than concern for immediate personal win-loss records.

The players’ long-term health and safety over anyone’s need to win.

Increasing poise and basketball-IQ’s from playing-up in close, hard-fought games, over gaining satisfaction from blowing out less-developed players.

Preserving the freedoms of all players to dribble, fast-break, guard and shoot, instead of limiting them to reduce mistakes and win games.

Acceptance and gratitude for opportunities to experiment and learn from mistakes and losses, instead of limiting players to skills already mastered.

Teaching strategic skill progressions, derived from breaking down state-of-the-art offense and defense systems, instead of running disconnected easy beginner drills.

Simultaneous instruction of technical and tactical basketball skills.

The formation of correct muscle memory and form over competing in games.

Securing the correct ball size and basket height to teach and preserve perfect form.

Teaching difficult Man2Man-defense progressions; not satisfied with winning easily using a 2-3 zone defense instead.

Good communication with parents and guardians.

The art of using positive self-fulfilling prophecy to increase players confidence and expectations to grow beyond present comfort zones and skill-levels.

Seeing and appreciating athletic potential; helping each reach her or his unique level.

Learning constantly new, proven-best skill-development methodology, to replace out-dated techniques.
